No Naps?

Christian has been fighting his naps this past week. Big bummer when Mommy is trying to catch up on rest. I tell him he needs to stay in his room and play quietly if he is not going to sleep. The other day, after an hour and a half of playing and talking to himself, it was finally quiet. This is how I found little man, asleep on the rug:

Christian is LOVING being a big brother. His favorite thing to do right now is "hold" Lucas. He becomes very concerned when Lucas cries, and takes my hand and pulls me to rescue him. C seems quite interested in "Wook's" facial features (pointing to his eyes, head, ears, etc.) and his bodily functions. :) We are so thankful that Christian is taking to Lucas so well thus far when we really didn't know what to expect. Lucas is 4 Weeks

I can't believe our newest addition is already 4 weeks! These past few weeks have been exhausting and a blessing all at the same time. Thankfully we are beginning to get into the swing of things slowly but surely. Much of that has to do with Lucas beginning to sleep longer at night- usually 5 then another 3+ hours, waking just once in the night. I am really hoping that he will keep it up and sleep through the night much sooner than Christian (who didn't until one year!) Lucas has been very alert from early on. I love watching him study our faces, but his favorite thing to focus on right now seems to be the dark ceiling fan in our family room- must be something with the contrasting colors. Lucas is nearly holding his head up on his own, it certainly won't be long! This past week he began wearing his 0-3 month clothes, and I am thinking he will be in size 1 diapers soon. So far I venture to say that Lucas is an "easy" baby, fairly predictable, and a good eater. We are enjoying his sweet nature, snuggly scrunched up body, and gentle coos. Nana's Special Visit

I have to say I have felt very blessed these past three weeks since Lucas has been born. Steve's parents were here for one week, and a couple days later my mom flew in to help for nearly two weeks! I had no idea what to expect during this initial transition with two little ones, so our family's help was fabulous!My mom's visit was wonderful. We had our own personal chef, house cleaner, nanny, laundress, etc., etc. :o) We were very spoiled, and really, she was so helpful that I am not sure what we are going to do now that she is gone. Time to get into a new routine (tomorrow is my first day solo with the two boys!) There is nothing better than having your mom around in the midst of life changes and a new chapter. Mom- we are so grateful for your help, mommy advice, and yummy cooking (Steve thanks you again for those fabulous cinnamon rolls and calzones. Also, the new upstairs bathroom is in the making.) Every time we are around our families it makes us just that much more homesick for Colorado. We are hoping and praying that God will lead us back there next.

When Christian was born, our immediate response was that he looked like a mini-Steve. With Lucas that was not our first impression. He definitely has a similar nose to Christian, but we aren't sure about his other features. Maybe Lucas will resemble Mommy more? It will be fun to see as he grows!

Lu bug is doing great! He is an excellent eater (he almost always seems hungry,) and I am really hoping that it will translate into longer hours of sleep at night SOON. I forgot about these long, rough nights...but I suppose it is good that we forget. :) At his two week doctor's appointment Lucas was 7 pounds 15 ounces putting him in the 25th percentile, and he was 20.5 inches long putting him in the 40th percentile for babies his age.Christian is doing well with his new baby brother. He doesn't give him a lot of attention just yet, but he does share his prized toys, "B" (blanket,) and his stuffed dog. Christian asks for his baby from time to time, and becomes very concerned when he cries. I am thinking that he is going to enjoy "Wook" more when Lucas becomes more alert and interactive. Even though the age difference seems great right now between them, I know it won't be long before I have two boys running around the house, throwing balls, wrestling, and doing stunts off the bed. Oy vey, what am I in for? :)

Snuggle Bug

We are enjoying lots of newborn snuggles in this household. My mom is visiting and helping us, and Christian is loving all of his Nana time. Lucas has been doing well, lots of sleeping and eating and waking in the night. Again we are so thankful for his good health and this sweet addition to our family.

Grandpa and Grandma's Christmas Visit

This Christmas we were unable to travel home to Colorado, so Steve's parents flew out on Christmas day and arrived in time for dinner and presents. It was God's perfect timing because this little man arrived just 5 hours after Christmas day. Being in the hospital half of their week-long visit I don't feel like I got as much quality time with them, but I know they were more than happy to help around the house and keep Christian entertained and occupied. Though we didn't get out too much we thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them and are thankful they were here to celebrate the birth of Lucas and enjoy those sweet newborn snuggles and coos.The "R" boys:Bob's birthday was on the 28th, so we had a little dinner and cake: Yay for Firehouse Subs: Swan Lake is always a favorite, I think Christian could spend all day here collecting sticks and acorns and watching the ducks, geese, and swans:

Our Christmas Gift- Welcome Lucas Jude!

Early in the wee morning on December 26, around 1 am I woke up with some sharp contractions. I got up from bed and walked around our bedroom, checking to see if they were at all consistent. They seemed to be, so I finished packing my bag, and tried to wait the suggested 1 hour before waking Steve up. 45 minutes into the contractions, I woke up Steve and told him, "I think we are going to have a baby!" When going into labor with Christian I didn't ever have false labor, or any prior-indicator that he was coming, and I thought that maybe this was true labor in this case too (although in the back of my mind I was a little worried that we would get to the hospital late in the night and my contractions would stop.) We arrived at the hospital a little after 2 am and I was already 6 cm dilated and 100% effaced. By 3 am I was 8-9 cm. By this point I felt like I just couldn't finish the labor naturally, so they gave me a little relief. The spinal block slowed down my labor and made that last cm take awhile longer, but by 5:13 am we welcomed our sweet, healthy baby boy! Lucas Jude was 7 lbs. 11 oz, and 20 1/4 inches long. My labor couldn't have been easier and I am so thankful for such a short delivery, and a full term baby! Praise God!!It was also a huge blessing that Steve's parents arrived the night before on Christmas Day. What perfect timing! Funny though, we didn't tell Steve's parents that we were going to the hospital because Steve didn't want to wake them late in the night. Unaware to us, they both had their cell phones charging in our kitchen and didn't receive our texts or phone calls in the night. So by 8 am we were becoming a little concerned that no one was answering- Steve returned to the house, Christian was happily playing in the family room and Grandpa and Grandma were sleeping in after a long day of traveling. :o) But it still all worked out. I wasn't released from the hospital until Wednesday and Christian, Daddy, Grandpa, and Grandma came to visit Lucas and I a couple times a day (so nice to be 15 minutes away from the hospital this time!) Although I don't feel like I have been able to spend much quality time with my in laws this visit, I am so thankful for the attention they have given Christian and help that they have provided this week. So glad that they could be here to share in this exciting time with the arrival of our sweet new arrival!

38 Weeks and Christmas Day 2011

I am looking very full here, but we had a wonderful day with our little family of 3 and then Steve's parents arrived later in the evening from Colorado. Christian was all about opening his presents this year. It has been so fun to see him enjoy all the traditions and excitement that come with the holidays.

I wasn't originally planning on sending out Christmas cards this year, but my friend Emily was designing them for free from her blog, Finding My Aloha. I just couldn't resist then. So...I ordered them Friday night from Walmart and had them in the mail in a week. *Whew* Now I just wish that I had ordered more, because I wasn't able to send them out to everyone I would have liked. Here is a virtual version, and hopefully next year I will be more on top of it.

37 Weeks

Whew! This is the longest I've ever been pregnant. :o) Today's doctor's appointment was encouraging. Little man had a steady heartbeat of 158 beats per minute. I am also 2-3 cm dilated and 80% effaced! The doctor seems to think that I could have this baby anytime now.I am still feeling pretty well overall. Winded walking up the stairs, difficulty sleeping, heartburn, general pelvic pressure- check, check, check, and check. But really, how can I complain? Both pregnancies up to this point have been so easy compared to other women's stories I have heard. More importantly, I am so thankful that we have this opportunity to be parents once again. So often I take it for granted that we have been able to easily have children and I forget to thank God for the wonderful blessing that it is. So when those sleepless nights due to feeding and crankiness come along here again soon, I pray that I will remember how richly God has blessed us, and to truly treasure those 2 am "snuggles."

Christian is 27 Months

Since I don't do Christian updates every month like I did during his first year, I thought I would try to do a little update every 3 to 6 months. Christian is such a joy in our lives. He is fun and silly, and we are enjoying him as he learns and picks up on everything. (We have found that we need to be a little more careful these days about what we do or say.) His vocabulary is continually increasing, although it seemed slow at first. It has been fun to see him get excited about the "school" that he attends once or twice a week, and I love watching him interact with other children. He is most certainly ALL boy. He loves wrestling with Daddy on the bed, attempts free fall stunts whether or not anyone is there to catch him, and enjoys using his loud voice. :) Funny how boys just know how to make airplane engine sounds and growl even though Mommy has to work much harder at it. Christian has also taken up an interest in coloring and writing with pens. He loves to sit at the table and color in his "Crayola Magic Wonder" books and coloring books when I am cooking in the kitchen, but he especially likes it when Momma and Daddy join in the fun. Of course, paper shredding is a big thing these days too- I haven't needed to use our machine paper shredder in some time now.
We talk about baby brother with Christian quite often, but I am still not entirely convinced that he truly understands the changes that are going to be taking place soon. He lifted my shirt one day last week, kissed my belly and said, "baby." Then he proceeded to lift his own shirt and say, "baby." He has also noticed the infant car seat that we installed last week. But I wonder how a two year old truly understands that there is a little life forming in Mommy's womb when it is difficult to comprehend the amazing miracle taking place even as an adult? Nevertheless, we are excited and I just know that Christian is going to be a wonderful big brother and even more, I look forward to the relationship that the boys will develop as they get older.
We are in love with our sweet two year old, and are so thankful that God gave us this mission as parents.

36 Weeks

It's hard to believe that I delivered Christian at 36 weeks and 4 days and here we are! I have been a little anxious about getting to this point without knowing whether or not baby #2 would come early as well, but so far we have made it. According to this morning's doctor appointment I am measuring at 37 weeks, the little guy is head down and is facing my left side, and he getting eager to stretch and see the world! I am guessing that we will have a December baby, but time will tell. Here's to 37 weeks and a healthy, full-term baby!

Winter Iris

These beauties (though not as vibrant) are blooming in our backyard right now. Crazy to see iris blooming in December! I think they are confused with the switch from 50 degree to 70 degree days and cool nights.We would love to see some snow here in South Carolina like last winter, so please send some from Colorado! The comfortable 70 degree days are wonderful, but a cool, balmy day on Christmas would be welcome and feel more like home. I guess we will just have to dream of a white Christmas (after Steve's parents arrive of course.)

35 Weeks

Getting closer! My lung capacity is quickly dwindling these days and I find myself winded quite often. Other than the heartburn and expected discomforts I am still feeling well. Today's doctor appointment was fairly uneventful. I was hoping that she would check to see if I am dilated or effaced, but she said she won't begin checking until I am 38 weeks. Checkups will be every week now! We are becoming really eager to meet this sweet little boy, and to experience those newborn snuggles once again.

Thanksgiving Weekend

Thursday through Saturday we enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving getaway in Charleston at my friend, Ashley's house. It was fun spending time with her and her daughters, and then on Saturday we had a Thanksgiving feast with Ashley's sister, Rachel and her family. Christian loved playing with his friend, Evalee and it was sweet to see them reunite and give hugs and kisses. Ashley watched Christian on Black Friday, so we went to Mount Pleasant and enjoyed a leisurely lunch and some Christmas shopping. Steve helped Ashley with some things around the house and we simply enjoyed her company and conversation. Cannot wait until Ashley and her family move back to Sumter when her husband returns from his deployment in the Spring, but it has been fun visiting and seeing more of Charleston. Sunday we played a little catch up and we finished decorating our home for Christmas. Love this time of year!

Our First "Stay at Home" Christmas

The tree is up, there are snowflake lights sparkling in the windows, Christmas music is playing, and the official Christmas cookie list is beginning to take shape. Steve has been ready to decorate for Christmas for a few weeks now...he said he needs to make up for missing the festivities last year. Fine with me...I love Christmas! Last year, if you recall I decided not to decorate much, with Steve deployed and Christian and I going home to Colorado for a month. This year is entirely different, and it is fun to begin getting our home ready for Christmas as we will be unable to go back home to Colorado to celebrate with our families this year (something to do with a baby arriving around that time.) This is my first time in 28 years to not be home for Christmas, Steve's second, but it is a good chance to begin some of our own holiday traditions, and it has been fun to bring out the holiday decor that we haven't seen since Christmas 2008 (in December 2009 we were moving from Edwards AFB.) Thankfully, we will be celebrating with some family here, as Steve's parents will be flying out Christmas day through New Years! (A perfect time for baby #2 to arrive at 38 weeks...hint, hint.) Anyway, it has been fun decorating with Christian...he loves that there is a tree in our home and it has been fun going to the stores to see the holiday decor. He especially enjoys all the inflatable snowmen, lights, and moving reindeer. Such a joyous time of year filled with excitement and anticipation, but I am hoping that as we prepare for our new addition and the Christmas season, that we will remember and begin a tradition of treasuring God and his ultimate gift.

33 Weeks

33 weeks, the time is still flyin'. I am trying to get the baby's room ready and organized, so that when he makes his surprise arrival I will be a little more prepared this time around. I may even try to pack our bags soon, since I packed our bags the day of when Christian was born at 36.5 weeks. Wouldn't it just be so much easier if we knew when he was going to make his appearance? :) In addition to baby preparations, I am trying to get our Christmas shopping done early, gifts wrapped, and shipped so that I can focus on everything else that may come in the busy month of December. At today's doctor appointment everything looked good (other than the 6 pounds I have gained in 3 weeks- Boo!) The baby's head is facing down, a huge blessing, and only 7 (give or take) more weeks of heartburn, pelvic pressure, cramps, and kickboxing. :o)Compare: 33 weeks with the first babe

Our Last Hurrah

...for a little while. This week we spent a few days at Disney World! It was kind of a spur of the moment trip. Steve had just finished a month-long conference and we had wanted to get one last little trip in before baby #2 arrives. Also, Monday was my birthday AND we got a great last-minute deal at Shades of Green, so it all worked out fabulously. :) This week in November is supposedly one of their least busiest times of the year, and really the wait times were pretty good. The weather was beautiful in the low-80's, however, we were totally unprepared and had packed winter-like clothing. We had even checked the weather throughout the week, but I guess we should have checked the weather the day of. Needless to say, we had to do a little summer clothing shopping. Wouldn't you know...they don't sell maternity clothes! Oh well, I managed to get by in the 3 days we were at the parks.

This was the 3rd time Christian has been to Disney World (he also went to Disneyland at 2 months!) It becomes more and more fun each time we bring him. This time he was walking more and we were able to do and see more things. He especially enjoyed the miniature trains and "the Seas with Nemo and Friends" at EPCOT, and "It's a Small World," "the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh," and "the Buzz Lightyear" ride at the Magic Kingdom. He repeatedly said, "adain (again)" and "ride" and "go" on this trip. So fun to see the wonder through his eyes.

Overall, we had a great family time. Lots of walking as expected and somehow at 32 weeks I survived the heat and exhaustion. We are really glad that we took advantage of the opportunity since we are unsure of when the next time we will travel.

30 Weeks

Man, this little growing boy is active! I am beginning to experience some discomfort as he seems to enjoy delivering sharp jabs and kicks, especially in my ribs! I am not sure that I remember Christian doing that. I never recall actually saying, "Oww!"...at least not until I was in labor.

The baby's heartbeat was 145 at this week's appointment, and everything is looking right on track...just sailing along. I am so thankful to have healthy and relatively "easy" pregnancies with minimal discomfort. Praying that the labor and delivery will be smooth as well.

Halloween Festivities

We kicked off this past weekend with a visit to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia. They had it all decorated for "Boo at the Zoo," their evening Halloween festivity in October. More importantly we got to see the fish in the aquarium and the penguins. Christian also took great notice of the snakes on this visit, pointing and saying, "Eww." I am thinking maybe he learned that from Daddy. Sunday night we attended First Baptist Church's fall festival, but it was just crazy insane. C enjoyed trunk or treating...and was eager to eat some "treats." This child does not like to get dressed! He wasn't so sure about his costume at first, and he kept saying, "want off," but he must have forgotten eventually that he was wearing it. I thought he made a pretty cute little sheriff. :o)Yesterday was surprising overcast, cold, and wet, so last night we attended the fall festival at Alice Drive Baptist Church (I am telling you there are so many churches here and nearly all of them had some sort of festival either on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.) It, too, was very busy and it was held outdoors which I was unaware of, but we stayed for a little while and ran into some friends. I think Christian mostly enjoyed helping Daddy give candy to the trick-or-treaters when we came home. And then he needed a treat too.

Christian's Big Boy Bed

This past weekend, Steve kindly took apart the crib (because it won't fit through the door otherwise) and put it back together in our guest/soon-to-be baby #2's room. The queen guest bed was transferred over to Christian's room, becoming his new "big boy" bed. During the whole process Christian didn't seem alarmed at all, and was glad to help Daddy put the crib back together with his own (plastic) power drill. He hasn't shown any interest thus far in wanting to get into the crib...but I am sure there will be some confusion when we begin to set up and organize the baby's room.
We are pleased to announce that the past 5 days Christian has slept soundly in his new bed. The box spring and mattress are on the floor so it is not far from the ground and I put pillows on either side of the bed to help him feel more secure. So far, he remains in his bed until I go in to get him. Overall it seems like it has been a good transition, but time will tell. At least we all have a little more time to adjust before the baby arrives.

A Beautiful Fall Weekend

This past weekend was gorgeous! Cool mornings and nights and 70 degrees during the day. We worked on a few things around the house (like Christian's bed transition) and relaxed on Saturday. Christian had a cold and fever, so he was a bit lethargic. Sunday after church we visited a little pumpkin "patch" and then played at Palmetto park. I am loving the pleasant crisp air, changing leaves, and the excitement of the holidays approaching.

On another note, Christian has been enjoying the fall/Halloween decor around the neighborhood and in the stores, and says "Boo!" whenever he sees a Halloween decoration or pumpkin ("Pum.") I have a feeling that he will especially LOVE all the sweets that are included with the season.

29 Weeks

Week 29! Entering the third trimester last week, the baby's heartbeat was strong and steady at 150 beats per minute. Everything is looking healthy and on track and I am feeling really well. Lord willing, baby boy #2 will arrive closer to his due date (January 8) instead of 3.5 weeks early like his big brother. Otherwise, we would have a baby in 7 weeks! Yikes!

We are beginning to make some transitions in our home, preparing for little guy's arrival. This weekend Christian made the switch to a big boy bed (post to come) freeing up the crib. I am also trying to prepare mentally for this little guy; trying to remember what I did with Christian as a newborn, and what things I would like to do differently this time around. We are excited, the time is going to fly by in these next weeks and before we know it, we will have a baby to hold.

Christian loves Phoenix's hideout just as much as Phoenix. Christian asks multiple times a day, "Where's the me?" (the meow/cat)...I often reply, "He's probably hiding." Hmm, I wonder why?

Pumpkin Patch at Willard Farms

Yesterday we took a little outing to Willard Farms for their pumpkin patch, corn maze, tractor ride, and let's be honest: delicious food! We have had beautiful weather in the low 80's and it was a perfect day for a visit. Half of Sumter thought so too...luckily we got there fairly early :o) We had a fun outing: Christian and Daddy went down the big slide a few times, we jumped on the "Blob" or "Big Pillow," and took a very short tractor ride to the corn maze...which could have been more fun if Christian would have been more willing to walk and not have mommy hold him. There are some other pumpkin patches and so many fall festivals to choose from in these next couple weeks...I love all the hubbub. Definitely looking forward to some more fun activities with my boys.

Rewind...26 Weeks and Another Picture

At this past week's appointment our baby boy had a heartbeat of 136, increasing to 153 when the doctor pressed the Doppler monitor against my belly. He even kicked at it a few times. Yes, I think we might just have another feisty little boy on our hands. Everything is looking good, and I will begin seeing the doctor every two weeks now.

Two days later I went in for another ultrasound so that the nurse could get a better image of the baby's right arm and face. This little guy decided to be stubborn even after walking around two times in attempt to get him to face forward. Once we finally got an image of both arms, he refused to remove his right hand from his face. I could tell the poor nurse was getting frustrated, but I think she was finally able to catch a good image of his nose and lips. Considering how active he normally is, I was surprised that he was sleeping so soundly despite the constant poking and prodding. It was post-lunch after all, so I suppose it was time for a nap. OR maybe baby #2 will just be a good sleeper? (Fingers crossed!)

While in Charleston we ate at this famous, 5 generation restaurant called Hyman's Seafood. Also part of the business: a general store and Aaron's Deli located on either side. "Naw-Naw" and "Baba's" Visit

This past week we enjoyed a great visit from my parents. They flew in on the 16th just in time for Christian's 2nd birthday on Saturday. Locally we enjoyed a visit to Swan Lake, Palmetto Park, and Baker's Sweets. Steve and my dad went on base a couple of times to play golf. And on Saturday evening the boys (minus the little one) attended the USC vs. Navy game.Monday through Thursday we enjoyed Charleston! This was our 3rd time, but my parents' first time to visit. We stayed at the Ansonborough Inn (because we love the location, and relative affordability) and enjoyed some new sites. On Tuesday morning we took a boat over to Fort Sumter where the civil war began in 1861. The 30 minute ferry ride was enjoyable and it was exciting to see dolphins both along the side of the boat and looking out into Charleston Harbor from the Fort. (Steve and C were also thrilled to see some C-17's flying back to Charleston AFB.) So glad that we were able to take the ferry and see Fort Sumter, such an interesting part of American history. Tuesday afternoon we went on a horse-drawn carriage tour around Charleston looking at historic sites and houses along Rainbow Row. We weren't sure how Christian would fare, but he seemed to enjoy "Luke" the horse and sitting in momma's lap...plus it helped that Nana was giving him mints (which she is now known for.) I especially enjoyed this tour, something different and we had a great guide.Wednesday morning my dad was able to play golf at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, while my mom, Steve, Christian, and I ventured around the pier (C was looking for whales,) Battery Park (White Point Gardens,) and the King Street shops. Wednesday evening my Dad and Steve toured the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon (something Steve and I saw on our first visit) while my mom, C, and I perused Charleston City Market and some additional shops. Yes, I would say we definitely had a very busy visit in Charleston. Oh, and did I mention the food? We tried some new (to us) restaurants including: the Noisy Oyster, East Bay Deli, Tommy Condons, and Hymans Seafood. And of course, a few Starbucks drinks and praline samples. :o) We headed back to Sumter on Thursday and my parents left on Friday morning. Though it was a week long visit, it seemed to go by so quickly. Gah! Don't you just hate that? Thanks for the special memories "Naw-naw and "Ba-ba!"

25 Weeks

25 weeks, 15ish to go. I am still feeling well, but am noticing the challenge of bending over and getting comfortable at night. Also, Christian has been especially clingy lately, only wanting Momma to hold him which is becoming increasingly more difficult. I am not sure if Christian understands all that is happening and that his world will change significantly at the beginning of the New Year. We are excited though, and pray that Christian and his little brother will have a special relationship in the years to come.

Christian is Two

It's hard to believe that our baby is 2 years old! I know I always say this, but the time just flies by.

We cannot get enough of our sweet, bubbly little boy. Always full of energy, galloping, running, and jumping around the house. On many occasions he has made me catch my breath, but he always gets up, hardly fazed by his risky stunts....the life of a boy, I guess I had better get used to it. :o)

Christian is talking more and more, and especially enjoys socializing with other children. He has been going to a "Parents Morning Out" preschool-type setting one day a week, 9-noon, and I can already see how he is learning and growing. (Mom enjoys the little break too.)

Though normally not the most fabulous eater, Christian must be going through a growth spurt because he has been eating better and more variety lately. He weighs 27 pounds 6 ounces, and is 35.5 inches tall.

Christian's favorite toys and activities include: whales, balls, sidewalk chalk, walks and wagon rides, his "Woody" toy from Disney Pixar's "Toy Story" (that daddy bought him,) books, airplanes, and his shape sorting barn.

"Na-na" and "Ba-ba" flew into South Carolina on the 16th to celebrate Christian's birthday. We enjoyed a simple time with family, cake, presents, and candles...and then took a fun trip to Charleston. (Post to come.) Basically, Christian's birthday celebration seemed to spread through the entire week.

Football Season

Lots of fall football in "R" household. We have enjoyed going to Jana Marie's (our neighbor and sweet friend) JV games to watch her cheer. We have also enjoyed two relaxing Saturday's of college football at Leigh's condo in Columbia which literally backs up to the USC stadium- such a fun getaway, but yet only 40 minutes away. I know Steve is especially enjoying the time with friends since he missed out on all the fun last year due to his deployment. And Christian is always thrilled to get out and about and to receive attention from others :) Fall football is a special pastime for me. Such fond memories. What about you? Today we were thrilled to learn the exciting news that we will be having another BOY! When we were pregnant with Christian both Steve and I had the feeling that it was a boy, but this time we were very unsure. My guess was a boy, but I didn't expect it in the same way I did with C. It was very special to have Steve there this time for the ultrasound (Steve was at a 4 month training at Fort Bragg with Christian) not just to learn the baby's gender, but to see the awesome images on the screen and to see the sweet little mannerisms and movement of the baby.

The technician was very thorough and took lots of time with us. Because the baby was facing toward my back, she had a hard time getting a shot of his right arm and profile so we will get to have another ultrasound in a month- hooray for that! (Hopefully I will have some better pictures then.) The baby is looking very healthy, weighing in at a little over a pound and his measurements put him right on time for my due date of January 8. We are so thankful for this sweet little blessing!

Christian and Evalee

It's about time that I wrote an official post about Christian and his sweet little friend, Evalee. I have posts however, from the past year here, here, here, and here. By far, Evalee is C's favorite little person. :o) He squeals whenever he sees her, and the two play so well together. They are only two weeks apart in age, and met shortly before their first birthdays, making Evalee Christian's oldest friend. Ashley (Evalee and Ruby Claire's mommy) and the girls will be moving to Charleston to be closer to family while their daddy is deployed. We are so bummed that we will not be able to see them as often, but are hoping to visit them as much as we can (especially during Steve's future TDY's.)

Nana's Visit

This past week my mom visited us in South Carolina. We picked her up in Atlanta on our drive back home from Alabama, and it was nice to have her finish the last of the drive with us. After unpacking and adjusting back into our normal routines, we were able to enjoy a visit and time together. We had a lot of fun hanging out, visiting Swan Lake, Palmetto Park, and Baker's Sweets in Sumter, and the Riverbanks Zoo, and Sandhills shopping area in Columbia. It was great having Nana with us for a full week while Steve is still TDY. Looking forward to both Nana and Papa coming back out next month for Christian's 2nd birthday and a few days in Charleston!

Christian (finally) had his second haircut this past week. His hair was getting pretty long and crazy, but it was just so hard for us (especially Steve) to cut those wild blonde curls. His first cut was at home, but this time we went to a salon. As you can see in the photos Christian wasn't so sure about the process and ended up sitting in my lap. He now has shorter curly hair, but at least it's a little more tame.

Pregnancy #2 is just flying by between travels and keeping up with the busyness of an almost 2 year old. I felt the baby for the first time last week at 17 weeks (a little earlier than when I felt Christian.) This week the baby's heart beat was 158 and everything is looking good. I am feeling really great and am enjoying having lots of energy despite the wicked heat and humidity in Sumter. With Steve being gone in Alabama, we had to push the BIG ultrasound to 22 weeks, so we will find out then if baby R 2 is a boy or girl. Steve said that he could wait until the birth, but I am not sure if I am that patient.

Yesterday Christian and I returned from Montgomery, Alabama where Steve is taking a 5 week course at Maxwell AFB. C and I were only able to stay the first 2 1/2 weeks because I needed to get back for a doctor's appointment, but overall we really enjoyed our time in Montgomery. Other than the cramped and non ideal lodging (C had his pack n' play in the tight kitchen,) Montgomery has nice shopping, restaurants, and other activities that Sumter (being a smaller city) does not offer. (Below are pictures of our "cozy" TLF living. Christian and Daddy especially enjoyed wrestling on the bed):We were also able to visit with old friends from Edwards AFB who are now stationed at Maxwell AFB and at Eglin AFB in Florida (a 3 hour drive.) It was certainly fun catching up with everyone since life has changed so much in the 2 years since we all moved from Edwards. The last time we saw these families we were all pregnant with our first baby, so it was fun to see how the family dynamics have changed and to finally meet these kiddos since we had only seen photographs. Christian also loved meeting and making new friends (Christian, Benjamin, and Annika were all born within a month of each other, and little Gunner is only 15 months behind.) Hard to believe how fast our little man is growing and that in September he will be two! Christian continues to be such a joy in our lives. He is always making us laugh and is full of energy and personality. He definitely has a strong opinion and will make sure that we know about it. His favorite things right now are his "B's" (blankets), drink cup (he is like a fish!), balls, bubbles, whales, and books. Christian is extremely analytical, manipulating small objects and studying things. He is learning to talk slowly but surely and is becoming more understandable all the time. We love our little guy and cannot wait to see what's in store these next couple months before the big TWO hits...here's to hoping the rumors are false ;)

When we were home in Colorado in June we had our (now annual) family photo shoot. With the addition of new babies the past 3 years, my parents have been eager to get an updated family picture whenever we are home. This summer we had a outdoor shoot with Jacob Mueller Photography (friend of my brother and sister-in-law) and the outdoor lighting made for such natural pictures. Christian was so serious during the shoot, but there were some that turned out so sweet. Now the hard part is choosing which ones to purchase.

Our Big News!

We are excited to announce that Christian is going to be a big brother! We are expecting a little someone around January 8, 2012. (Which also happens to be my dad and Steve's brother's birthday.) This may even be a December baby considering how early Christian was born. I am almost 14 weeks along and feeling really well as we move into the second trimester. Thankfully, the first trimester was just as smooth and easy as it was during my pregnancy with Christian, however I think I was much more tired this time around (maybe it has something to do with keeping up with a toddler?)

We have seen the doctor twice now and the baby is healthy thus far with a heartbeat of 169 at 8 weeks and 178 at 10 weeks. I feel as through my belly "popped" out really early at only 6 weeks, which I guess is common for second pregnancies, but I knew we had better tell everyone the exciting news before they started guessing on their own. I am especially eager to find out what we will be having, a baby brother or sister for Christian? Regardless, we are praying for a healthy baby and delivery this winter!

A 4th of July Staycation

Originally we had wanted to travel somewhere locally (Savannah, Charlotte, or Greenville) for a mini vacation this past Fourth of July weekend, but with a series of TDY's coming up and a new car that has taken a large chunk from our savings, we decided to stay home. And you know what? It was quite relaxing and refreshing. We kept busy and did NO housework. :o) We went to the zoo, 2 BBQ's, 2 outings to the pool, I went to a movie with a friend, and we enjoyed part of the Freedom Festival at Sandhills in Columbia. On Thursday we went with my friend Ashley, her two daughters, Evalee and Ruby and her niece, Ayla to the EdVenture Children's Museum. I had a Groupon deal that was going to expire that day, so it worked out perfectly to bring the 4 kiddos for a little exploration. Christian and Evalee particularly enjoyed:

*Milking the cow, collecting eggs, and sitting in the tractor at the farm

*Grocery shopping

*The "My Backyard" exhibit specifically designed for children under 3.Christian and I have both been enjoying getting out and about, especially during these hot summer months. Looking forward to many more summer adventures!

Willard Farms

Yesterday C man and I went to Willard Farms with a group of parents and children from our church for a summer children's ministry called "Wonder Wednesdays." (We have been wavering a bit on churches, but I think we will finally be committing to the one we originally attended last summer up until Steve's deployment.) Last summer we attended this same farm event, but this year it was so much more fun for both Christian and I since he can now walk and explore on his own. He especially enjoyed the "big pillow" jumper, the long slide (with mommy) in the dirt hill, and the cow train (all by himself!) We ended the outing with hot dogs and chicken salad sandwiches for the mommies and a nice time of fellowship. C was thoroughly exhausted by the time we got home and ready for a nice nap (and mommy was ready for a rest too.)

New Ride

Oh, did I mention that we purchased a new car while we were in Colorado? We were looking for something with more cargo space, tinted windows, more room, etc. Also, with all the road trips we take, we thought it was time for something more comfortable. We ended up getting a great deal on a Hyundai Santa Fe, and even with shipping the car from Colorado to South Carolina, it was cheaper than had we bought it locally. We finally received it Thursday night and took it for its first drive on Saturday morning. It is so nice and smooth, and we love it! Christian didn't want to get out...I think he will especially enjoy sitting up higher where he can see out the window. Next step will be selling our Dodge Stratus, but we are thinking and hoping it will sell quickly.

Last Friday morning I watched Christian's little friend, Evalee (she has a new baby sister!) The kiddos LOVED playing outside in the water. Evalee had the giggles and thought it was hilarious when Christian would (intentionally) slip in the squirter pool. Don't you just love their round little tummies?

We have had heat advisories this week and it is just the beginning of summer. The "dog days" have yet to arrive *ugh.* I guess I will dream about cooler fall days for now. :o)

Colorado...How We Miss You

This past week we were home in Colorado. It was the first time Steve had been home in a year and a half so it was refreshing to be there together. The trip seemed so short (but sweet) compared to the much longer stays that Christian and I have had with Steve being gone often. As always it was hard trying to divide our time and ultimately we did not see everyone and do everything that we may have wanted. BUT the time we did have was special. We were able to go out and do lots of fun things with our families and we especially enjoyed the cooler Colorado weather with no humidity. :o) Just a few highlights:

We finally met our nephew, Shepherd who was born in February. He is such a sweet, easy-going baby.

My mom, Christian, and I visited the Littleton Museum for a little outing and to see the farm animals.

We visited the Downtown Aquarium in Denver with Steve's parents, sister Kristi, nephew Logan, and niece Kaitlyn. Steve fed the Stingrays. Christian LOVED the fish.

We visited Lake Evergreen for our mountain fix and fresh Colorado air. Lunch at Beau Jo's Pizza - mmm, what could be better?

We also headed up to Boulder one morning to meet my grandparents for breakfast at Turley's (I love that place!) and a walk down Pearl Street Mall. My mom and grandparents enjoyed reminiscing.

Steve was absolutely thrilled to visit the Colorado Renaissance Festival in Larkspur with his brother Will, his finance Brittany, and Kristi and her family. Steve was just disappointed that he did not have his Ren Fest tights...bummer.

The last day we enjoyed a walk and hike in Castle Rock with Steve's family. C, Will, Brittany and I headed back early. It was probably one of the hottest days while we were out there. (Sorry, no pics.)

Did I mention we miss Colorado? We miss our families so much and wish we had more time to spend with everyone. Thanks for making our trip extra special. We love you!

Memorial Day at Myrtle Beach

This past 3-day holiday weekend we enjoyed a fun trip to Myrtle Beach. We went last May with my parents, so it had been awhile. Only about 2 hours away, Myrtle beach offers more of a "family" and tourist-like environment with many different restaurants, hotels, miniature golf places, various entertainment and shopping. Of course most head to Myrtle Beach for the beaches and beautiful golf courses. All of the hotels offer nice pools and some even water parks and lazy rivers (like the past two where we stayed.) We went with our neighbors, Leigh and Jana Marie who were kind enough to invite us to stay with them in their 2 bedroom condo. Christian enjoyed throwing balls around in the pool and all the attention from the girls, however he still is unsure of the sand at the beach. We enjoyed the delicious food, ocean views, and most of all getting away. :o)

This past week Steve's mom was here in South Carolina for a little visit. Christian loved playing with Grandma and enjoyed the special attention. The time seemed to fly by as it always does when you are having a great time. Highlights of our time together included visiting Riverbanks Zoo, Baker's Sweets, EdVenture Children's Museum, and Swan Lake. The best part was simply enjoying each other's company. We are excited to see Grandma and our families again soon in Colorado!

Daddy's Favorite Little Helper

Christian absolutely adores his "Dah-dy." When Steve comes home from work, it is all about him. C loves playing, following, and "helping" Daddy in his own special way. Home Projects: Outdoor Sitting Area

In the backyard between the house, concrete patio, pond, and brick wall was this very nondescript area of the yard, mostly taken over by weeds and a few random plants.

Before:I wish I could take more credit, but Steve spent a couple of Saturdays turning the area into a beautiful sitting retreat that overlooks the pond and can be seen from our bedroom window. He planted fragrant gardenia and jasmine, which we hope will fill the space with an inviting aroma.

This past Saturday we placed the stone pavers and brick edging (digging a hole for each) and spread the pine straw (big here in the South.) We are thinking about still planting some ground cover between the pavers, but for now, here in the finished product. I think it turned out beautiful. Do you like it?

Mother's Day 2011

Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful mommies! I am so blessed to know you and am grateful for all the lovely women in my life.

My Mother's Day was nice and relaxing. Breakfast at IHOP, church, an afternoon nap, and a fun BBQ at a friend's house. Such a sweet, simple day shared with the ones I love.

P.S. Christian had quite the week of bumps, bruises, and boo boos. Steve was TDY half the week and I had the privilege of reporting the day's accident each night. The scratches on his nose were from a tumble in the driveway. All boy!

Strawberry Picking

Yesterday we went strawberry picking at Stafford Farm, a close 15 minute drive from our house. Evalee was a good helper and helped her Mommy (Ashley) pick the strawberries and put them in the bucket; Christian "helped" by picking the strawberries and eating them. You can imagine what his clothes looks like after eating a handful of extra ripe, sun-warmed, juicy strawberries. :o) The kids had a great time, and now we each have a large bucket of strawberries to show for it. These farm fresh strawberries are so sweet and nearly melt in your mouth, it will be hard to go back to the store bought variety. The plan is to make strawberry jam next week, and maybe some bread or strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream. Yum!Our strawberry shortcakes (on the ride home after a visit to the park too.)

Easter Weekend

Christian and his new lawnmower from Nana and Papa (it was too cold and wet Saturday morning to bring it outside, but I think Christian enjoyed mowing the floors in the house- or maybe he thought it was a vacuum cleaner?)Easter Sunday with Mama. It got up to 86 degrees! And yes, humid too.After church, brunch at the O Club on base, and a nap, C went hunting for Easter eggs in the backyard. They were filled with fruit snacks which he loved!Last but not least, a BIG congratulations to Steve's brother, Will and his engagement to Brittany this past weekend! They are planning to tie the knot August 2012!

Tampa Getaway

Steve has already had two week-long TDY's since being back from his deployment (another one coming up in a couple of weeks.) Fortunately, on the second we were able to tag along...to Tampa!

Nearly spur of the moment, we decided to drive the 8ish hours with Steve (the hotel was already paid for, and what's not to like about Tampa?) We happened to mention the trip to our dear neighbors, Leigh and Jana Marie and they decided to come for the first half of the week since JM was on Spring Break. What a great time we had! Beautiful 90 degree weather, Starbucks in our hotel, and a fabulous swimming pool! We were already familiar with Tampa from our trip last December, so I had a pretty good idea about how to get around and where to find the fun things to do.

We went back to the beautiful white sands and crystal waters of Clearwater Beach. Definitely more crowded than when we went in December. Christian went in the ocean for the first time and loved hanging on Jana Marie. He refused, however, to put his feet in the sand (or walk on it for that matter.) Any time I tried to put him down he would have one foot curled in the sand and the other raised like a flamingo. I guess the texture must feel so funny to his toes.We also enjoyed taking walks along the Riverwalk, which was right across from our hotel downtown. They have a nice playground for the children, and we liked watching the big birds and reading the creative names on the yachts parked on the docks.The last couple of days Christian and I were on our own, but we walked to the Florida Aquarium and marveled at the fish and sea creatures and enjoyed getting a little wet at the fun splash zone (I wish I had thought to bring his swim trucks.) Looks like Steve may be going TDY to Tampa often, so Christian and I may just have to tag along when we can. Christian is becoming such a pro at traveling and there is still so much more exploring to do in Tampa!

Sitting in his "new" big boy chair on the back patio:

Gahh! Growing bigger by the day. This week C had his very belated 18-month appointment. He weighed 26 pounds, and was 32.5 inches tall. Putting him in the 50th percentile for both weight and height for children his age. This also means no more vaccinations until he is four! Woot!

He is also talking so much more these days. His current list of words are:

Ba Buh (Bye Bye)

Baul (Ball)

Hi-ya (Hi)

It's really a fun age since he picks up on so much and understands more than we know even if he can't always express it himself (of course, this is why the pre-verbal stage is so difficult at times too.) Christian will often try to repeat things that we say and we really get a kick out of him saying words (and sounds) in his sweet little boy voice...sometimes very LOUD boy voice. :o)

Christian has quite the arm. He loves to throw (hopefully a ball) and is gaining quite some distance and speed when he does so. He loves balls right now!

A Little Treat

Look what Christian had as an after dinner treat last week. (Vanilla ice cream- I know, of all the other possible flavors.) I try to keep the sweets to a minimum, but sometimes you just gotta spoil them right? :o) He definitely enjoyed the treat, although surprised by the cold at first.

No, this is not a post about my favorite Food Network television show, but rather my hair! I have been debating for literally YEARS about cutting my hair drastically. I have had long hair of various lengths for as long as I can remember (think middle school!) so last November I had a good 6 inches cut, easing into a "bigger" decision. Last weekend while in Charleston, I finally did it and had another 5 inches cut (now I regret not doing "Locks of Love" had I known I would really cut it all off.) I know this may not seem like a big deal, but having had long hair for such a long time, it really was for me. I had just gotten to the point where I wore it up more than down, and was getting too lazy to style it; there really wasn't even a point in keeping it long. So there you have it, a new, fresh me just in time for spring. :)

A Pretty and a Cutie

Steve is TDY this week (boo) but we have been enjoying some nicer weather and have been hanging out in the backyard. We also enjoyed a girls and boy (5 girls and Christian) weekend with some friends in Charleston. Our Dining Room

From my parents for Christmas we received money to put toward a dining room table. Our dining room had been sitting "empty" (other than becoming Christian's playroom) for about 10 months so we finally purchased a table and chairs last month. I am excited because the room is just too beautiful to not be used and made a little more formal. We decided to purchase a set that could possibly be used as a kitchen table in a future home since our current one is a small 4-seater from when I was a child! Here are the first inside pictures of our house- starting with the dining room. Yes, it is undecorated at this point other than a single wall picture, but you get the overall view. (Sorry they are so dark.) Christian is enjoying the new table as well...

Bears

Christian has been going through a phase lately where he really likes to play with his bears. He carries them from room to room, puts them on the floor and then snuggles, rolls, and wrestles with them. Of course, it is even more fun when Daddy joins him. It has been quite rainy these past few days and it has cooled down significantly too, so I thought I would post pictures of the pond in our backyard- the first ones of the year. (Taken last week.) The beautiful warm spring weather gave us a little tease I suppose, but hopefully warmer temperatures will be in our near future. 1st Haircut

Last week Christian had his first (and long overdue) haircut. My sweet friend Ashley's sister cuts hair so she came over to our house. Christian was not the easiest little client, but somehow she managed to do a great job and clip all those crazy long hairs and even a few curls *sniffle.* Here are some shots (although not the best) of the result- now he looks even older than before.

With Spring comes Spring Cleaning! Yay! And I really do mean "yay!" Of course in my mind I think of organizing and cleaning out closets vs. the actual cleaning. I feel like we are generally pretty good about cleaning when it comes to vacuuming, bathrooms, and the surface stuff, but I admit, I am not good about the nitty gritty (window washing, moving furniture to clean, dusting, cleaning shutters, light fixtures, ceiling fans...well, you get the picture.) When we moved into our house last May, we did a good cleaning of all the cabinets, shelves, and drawers before unpacking, but that is pretty much where it ended. We had only lived here three months before Steve left for his deployment, so we did not get everything done as far as a good deep cleaning and also project-wise. I mostly did the obvious cleaning while he was away in attempt to keep my head above water and still have a little time to myself. So, in addition to our long "to do" list of outdoor projects before spring and summer really hit, we have a nice long list of indoor projects and "to do's" as well. To help us get our home clean and in order, Steve had this idea that in addition to our normal, every day/weekly cleaning tasks (such as laundry, dishes, wiping the counters, bathrooms, vacuuming, etc...) we should each tackle one extra task each day. Something that might be forgotten or go without being cleaned for a long period of time. For example, that might mean cleaning the shutters and windows in a room, the shelves in the refrigerator, or the baseboards or switch plates. Just those little things that get lost in the big picture. Lately I have been working on our windows and plantation shutters room by room. I haven't cleaned them the entire time we have lived here, and quite honestly I am not sure if the former owner ever cleaned them either. Yikes! So...it does feel good to have those cleaned instead of procrastinating and thinking, "I really should clean those one of these days soon." It is the little stuff. And though I was a little insulted at first by Steve's idea ("So you're saying I'm not a good housekeeper?") I am beginning to see how easy it is and how it will definitely pay off in the long run (especially since Steve is helping and doing "one extra" everyday too.)

I promise to post some pictures of the inside of our home sometime soon. It is about time! (Maybe once more cleaning is accomplished *wink.*) How do you keep up with all the housework, dust bunnies, and those little forgotten things?

[This is our home from last summer. Not sure if you can tell in the photo, but all the plants were crazy, out-of-control...so much so that it was a little hard to tell what was weed vs. perennial, shrub, etc. In addition to Spring Cleaning we have been working on a list of outdoor projects and yard work now before everything has a chance to take over at lightning speed. Cannot wait for that lush green though!]

Hello Spring!

It's officially here! The pollen storm has begun too. I remember how surprised I was last Spring to see everything covered in a yellow dusting. Now it is rather annoying as a home owner. It is everywhere and gets tracked into the house so easily, especially with a little boy who likes to be in and out. As I recall it only lasted a couple of weeks, so hopefully it will be the same this year.

Christian is 18 Months

I cannot believe our "baby" is a year and a half. Christian is looking more and more like a little boy, rather than a baby or toddler. He is thinning out from all the running and constant movement. I think his smile also makes him look older...all those teeth! Despite being a little ornery at times, Christian is truly a joy. He has such a fun personality, sense of humor, and a great smile, although so very hard to catch on camera sometimes (then again, it is hard to catch him on camera other than the back of his head.) C has been talking away, not a lot of clear words yet, but A LOT of animal, car, and plane sounds. Other than the not-so-fun discipline part of this age, we truly enjoy watching Christian learn and interact with others. Such a blessing to see the world through the eyes of a child.

Disney Magic

Our final trip during Steve's R & R after his deployment was to...you guessed it...Disney World! If you know us well, you know that we (especially Steve) love Disney World and Disneyland. We had season passes to Disneyland the majority of the time while we were stationed at Edwards AFB in California. It was always fun being able to take the 1.5-2 hour (once 6 due to a wildfire) drive to Disneyland for a little getaway from the desert. Christian is almost 18 months and has already been to Disneyland and Disney World 2 times now! What a spoiled little boy. :o) Anyway, back to our trip....

We had a wonderful time! We stayed at the Shades of Green military resort, which was quite a bargain for being so nice and also within walking distance to Disney's Polynesian Hotel and the transportation center. We went to EPCOT 2 days (because it is our favorite park) and the Magic Kingdom 1 day, and of course, Downtown Disney because I needed to get my Ghirardelli hot chocolate. :o)

Christian loved any chance that he could walk around, explore, and help Disney with their gardening needs. (Spending so much time at our house doing yard work lately has translated into Christian wanting to dig in the dirt and rearrange the mulch.)

It was fun to see C's face light up and he especially seemed to enjoy "Its a Small World" and "The Seas with Nemo and Friends" aquarium at EPCOT. Each morning Christian was excited for another day and would actually want to be in his stroller (temporarily) ready to head out from our hotel room.

EPCOT was having their "International Flower and Garden Festival" which was really neat to see the Disney character topiaries and beautiful gardens. I especially liked the butterfly garden.

Other than Christian having a stomach bug on the way home and enduring a very smelly 7.5 hour drive (we had to pull over to change his clothes 3 times) we had an excellent Disney World vacation. I am sure that future Disney plans will be in order soon. But now, after 3 weeks of fun together, today it is back to reality.

We have been busy doing lots of yard work...raking, weeding, pruning, chopping. Spring is just around the corner for South Carolina. Bulbs are popping up and trees are getting their buds.
